Making a Sacred Space for Creativity

Oh my, this topic resonates on so many levels for me. My own sacred space; I’m grateful I have that already. So how can you make sacred space for creativity? And something I think worth exploring, what is creativity?

From my own experience, I’m going to start with that last bit. When I first came to TN I was encouraged to make more of, and sell, my Japanese Ink paintings, which I did. I cannot tell you how many times people would say to me at shows, “oh, I could never do that, I can’t draw.” The look of amazement on their face when I would reply “no indeed neither can I.” Ink painting is not drawing. Mosaics & ceramics are not drawing. Needlework is not drawing. So many people have suffered that terrible sinking feeling of negative criticism in childhood because their cat looked like a dog, or a stick, or maybe nothing much at all. Their “drawing” fell short of someone’s expectations and they then forever decided they are NOT creative!

Au Contraire dear friends, on the contrary. I firmly believe that every human is creative, some of us have just not yet found that one thing that lights us up. A computer programmer designing & building a GUI (graphical user interface) is just as creative as Picasso, and in my opinion (cough, cough) possibly a site more useful!

So, the first part of answering the posed topic from HIW this month is making the decision to be, or indeed acknowledge, that you are already creative. What’s the next step? To make space of course. It could be a whole garage space to make drip paintings, a wood-turning workshop, or a small bead tray to create bracelets.  Ultimately it could be a room to call your own, or maybe just room in your mind for acceptance/acknowledgment that you are truly creative.

As I said, I am lucky to have my “sacred space” where I’m surrounded by light, beautiful crystals and incredible accelerator images from Bryan De Flores. However, even beyond the physical, I have my rituals and I have my mental space that acknowledges that what I do is special, needed, wanted and beautiful.

What stones can help us? This month I chose Aventurine because the wisdom I found in Judy Hall’s explanation for me starts with how it “stabilizes one’s state of mind…”

Aventurine is a very positive stone for prosperity. Can defuse negative situations and turn them around. Promotes compassion and empathy and encourages perseverance. It stabilizes one’s state of mind, stimulates perception and enhances creativity. It sees alternatives and possibilities. This stone brings together the intellectual and emotional bodies. Enables living within one’s own heart. To the left is green Aventurine – it also comes in blue, red, brown & peach.

 

There are quite a few other stones that can enhance, expand, and encourage creativity if you already believe you have it:

• Alexandrite (Chrysoberyl) – Brings joy, expands creativity, increase spiritual & personal power.
• Bloodstone – Heightens intuition & increases creativity.
• Celestite – A creative stone, useful for the arts.
• Cerussite – Balances left/right hemispheres, encourages creativity.
• Citrine – Carries the power of the Sun, warming, energizing, & highly creative.
• Fluorite – Enhances creativity, orderly thoughts & communication.
• Garnet (Pyrope) – Blood red in color. Unifies the creative forces within.
• Herkimer Diamond – Energizes, enlivens & promotes creativity.
• Kunzite – A tranquil, extremely spiritual, & high vibration stone, enhances creativity.
• Lapis Lazuli – Powerful thought amplifier, stimulates higher faculties. Encourages creativity through attunement to the source.
• Tiger’s Eye – Aids recognizing one’s talents & abilities. Heals issues of self-worth, self-criticism & blocked creativity.

A final thought. Over time I’ve been privileged to be able to create my sacred space, mentally & physically, but it takes time. However, I think it was Lao Tzu who said “a journey of 1000 miles starts with the first step.”
